Description
4DRoot is a free and open-source MATLAB-based software designed to enhance the efficiency of 3D root phenotyping. It processes 3D X-ray CT scan files in STL format and automatically generates precise data on global root traits, such as length, convex hull, volume, and depth, as well as branching hierarchy and topology. For time-series data, the software also automatically calculates root growth dynamics. Originally developed for black walnut plants grown in soil-filled pots, 4DRoot can be applied to X-ray CT scans of any plant species. The software requires only a single user-defined parameter before performing high-throughput analysis of segmented root system scans, making it a valuable tool for genetic research and plant breeding. However, its use is restricted to those with a valid license for the commercial MATLAB software.
